Mastering Plastering: Tips for Interior and Exterior Walls

Plastering is an important skill for achieving smooth and durable surfaces on both interior and exterior walls. Whether you're renovating a room or adding a new coat of plaster to your home's facade, here are some essential tips to help you achieve professional results:

Mixing the Plaster:
Start by gathering loose, damp plaster sand along with cement. Mix the sand and cement thoroughly until well combined. Slowly add water while stirring until you achieve a thick paste consistency that can stand by itself without collapsing. The mixture should be wet enough to spread easily with a trowel.

Application Process:
  • Load your trowel with the plaster mix and apply it to the wall using an upward sweeping motion, exerting pressure to ensure it adheres well to the surface.
  • As the plaster begins to stiffen, use a wooden straight edge tool to level the surface with a swaying motion, ensuring a smooth and even finish.
  • Wet the levelled plaster with water, using a brush to flick water over the surface. This helps in keeping the plaster workable and prevents it from drying out too quickly.
  • Use a smoothing tool to further refine and smooth the surface, creating a professional-looking finish.
  • After completing the plastering process, cover the plastered area with a fine spray of water and keep it damp for up to seven days. This gradual drying process enhances the strength and durability of the plaster.
Plastering Around Openings:
When plastering around window and door openings, use lining boards braced across the top and sides of each opening. These boards serve as guides for maintaining a consistent plaster thickness (typically around 12mm from the brick face). Use an angle tool to smooth off the edges neatly for a polished appearance.

Important Tip: Aim for a plaster layer that is no more than 15mm thick to ensure proper adhesion and durability of the plastered surface.

By following these steps and tips, you can master the art of plastering and achieve professional-quality results on both interior and exterior walls. Remember to work efficiently, keep your tools clean, and maintain a consistent thickness throughout the plastering process for the best outcomes. Happy plastering!
